In the two years since Arctic Economic Council was founded as an offshoot of the Arctic Council, its members have been building the organization from the ground up, establishing a secretariat in Tromso, Norway, and a governance structure.
In Canada’s north, internet is slower and more expensive than anywhere else in the country. Despite recent improvements, northern users say more action is needed before the system grinds to a halt.
Much of the Canadian Arctic is still powered by old, diesel-fired power plants. In Nunavut, the reliance on diesel is total, and in the Northwest Territories it’s a drain on government funds. In both places, a post-carbon economy is for now a distant fantasy.
