As California considers how to fund safe drinking water for all communities, Jay Lund of University of California, Davis has an idea to combine small, mandatory charges with larger, voluntary, charges for residential customers.
A movable water treatment system developed at UCLA fits in a shipping container and can be operated remotely with a smartphone. Yoram Cohen says the goal is to help small communities that lack the expertise to run traditional water treatment plants themselves.
The state has a long-term plan to clean up nitrate-contaminated groundwater, but farmers say more research is still needed and environmental groups think the proposal isn’t strong enough.
It will take decades to slow nitrate contamination in groundwater from industrial agriculture in parts of the state of California, so communities are taking matters into their own hands to get clean drinking water.
In the third video in our “Toxic Taps” series, we traveled to Sacramento, where San Joaquin Valley residents rallied to support Senate Bill 623, which would create a fund to clean toxic drinking water sources.
