‘Build a Woman and You Build a Nation’: The Women Peacemakers of Jos

Religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in Jos, central Nigeria, have led to clashes in which several thousand people have been killed. But one NGO has an innovative solution: bringing women from both sides together to discuss their issues.

The city of Jos, in central Nigeria, has been torn apart by religious violence since 2001. Thousands of people have died in clashes between Christians and Muslims, and tens of thousands have been forced from their homes. The two communities have become polarized and rarely mix.

The Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Movement is helping bring the two sides together, arranging regular meetings between Christian and Muslim women. The charity believes that not only will this build trust, but it will also prevent future violence.

This story is part of our in-depth series, Women of Peace, which examines the contributions of women peacemakers throughout the world, as well as the challenges they face in the field. To explore the collection, please visit our dedicated mini-site.
