Thank You, Deeply

In many parts of the world, to be a woman is to live under the constant threat of violence. The most prevalent form of violence against women often happens in secret, at the hands of husbands and partners.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization, worldwide almost a third of women who have been in a relationship have experienced some type of domestic abuse. Only a fraction – less than 10 percent – ever report it to the police.

In some countries, domestic violence isn’t classified as a crime; in many others, it’s a taboo subject, considered a family matter that shouldn’t be discussed in public, let alone in the media. With this series, we shine a spotlight on the problem of domestic abuse. Speaking to survivors, experts, authorities and advocates, we reveal the barriers women face when they try to get help, and look at ways of supporting women who are so often forced to suffer in silence.
