KARNATAKA, India – There are more than 4 million domestic workers in India, many of whom face poor conditions and daily abuse. But in 2012, in the city of Karnataka, Nisha Mathews set up a union to help domestic workers fight for better pay and conditions. So far, the union has secured a minimum wage, pensions and insurance for domestic workers in the state. Mathews also set up a home where children who are forced into domestic work, or those who are rescued from being sold as slaves to other parts of India, can attend school.
