In many parts of rural Zimbabwe, the idea of a woman leading men is strictly taboo. But some women tribal chiefs are breaking free of traditional rules and encouraging others to take decision-making roles and become economically independent.
When 32 Zimbabwean women escaped their abusive employers in Kuwait, they struggled to find work back home. A new initiative offers them money and support to start their own businesses or go to college.
When a woman in Zimbabwe gives birth to a disabled child, she can find herself rejected by her husband and facing poverty. At the Batsiranai Craft Center, these mothers get together to earn a living and give each other the strength to raise their children on their own.
