Kenya’s tourism industry has been crippled by terrorism and political violence and let down by lack of development. For the women who rely on the sector for their income, the question is whether they will ever again earn enough to support their families.
Tourism to Africa is set to jump to 134 million visitors by 2030. But the majority of high-earning jobs in the industry are held by men, a new report from the U.N.’s trade and development body has found.
In the West Bank, opportunities for women are few, and they suffer higher unemployment rates than men. But one community initiative based on a famous hiking trail is offering a chance for women to welcome tourists, sharing their experiences and culture along the way.
