Hannah Hoag is the former managing editor of Arctic Deeply. She has covered climate change, science policy, energy and health for more than a decade, reporting for a wide range of publications that include Nature, Discover, Wired, New Scientist, Maclean’s and the Globe and Mail. She is a contributor to The Science Writers’ Handbook: Everything You Need to Know to Pitch, Publish, and Prosper in the Digital Age, and served as deputy editor for the book’s website. Before turning to journalism, Hannah studied rare genetic diseases, but she decided reporting on science and its impacts might be a more exciting career. It also offered more adventure: Hannah has reported from an ice floe in the Beaufort Sea, a rainforest in Guyana and a canoe drifting across a northern Ontario lake.

A new report finds that the “staggering” rate of warming in the world’s oceans is shifting fisheries, spreading disease and altering the behavior of many marine species around the world – including in the Arctic.
Researchers in the Bering Sea are using autonomous sailing vessels, powered by the sun and wind, to collect data on ocean conditions, fish and marine mammals in a rapidly changing, biologically rich area.
Four Arctic nations are submitting claims to the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Law of the Sea to gain control of the ocean floor beyond the 200-nautical-mile limit. It’s not a race, but a huge scientific process.
Martin Sommerkorn, who heads up the conservation arm of the World Wildlife Fund’s Arctic Program, says that while we may not know exactly how Arctic marine ecosystems will be altered with climate change, building linked networks of Marine Protected Areas can help them adapt to future climate change.
