Residents and scientists are working to cull urchins that ravage environmentally important kelp ecosystems. But experience shows that once urchins take over, restoration is difficult and may become even harder as the ocean warms.
Most anchovies and herring commercially fished in California end up as fishmeal or bait, not on dinner plates. Now there’s a movement to get people to eat, not waste, small fish, and that could help preserve bigger species.
A new initiative will deploy acoustical and thermal imaging technology off California to locate the world’s largest animal and alert nearby vessels. But it’ll only help blue whales if captains of large ships heed warnings and slow their boats.
As anchovy populations crash in the ocean, the surviving forage fish move close to shore, attracting record numbers of whales and other marine life to an all-they-can-eat banquet. But scientists say the bounty is not sustainable.
